I noticed that a lot of people think you need high accuracy tools to build a transistor, you dont, not if you are building a type of transistor that barely saw the light of day. The first transistors made, were designed to replace the vacuum tube, and were huge, crude, inefficient, and ugly. But much better then vacuum tubes. Principles of Electronics by V.K Mehta, Rohit Mehta 10/18/ Books This book is written specially for the students preparing for diploma, .

The first practical device that could amplify was the triode vacuum tube, invented in by Lee De Forest, which led to the first amplifiers around Vacuum tubes were used in almost all amplifiers until the s–s when transistors replaced them. Today, most amplifiers use transistors, but vacuum tubes continue to be used in some applications.
Scattering-free transport in vacuum tubes has always been superior to solid-state transistors. It is the advanced fabrication with mass production capability at low cost which drove solid-state. Unlike vacuum diodes, no humming sound is produced by semiconductors at the time of operation. Compared to vacuum tubes, semiconductor devices always need a low operating voltage. Because semiconductors are small in size, the circuits involving them are also very compact. Unlike vacuum tubes, semiconductors are shock-proof.

A very unassuming title for a page engineering book. The first part of the book has a rather in-depth treatment of vacuum tube operation, and details of amplifier circuit design. The second part delves into the physics of gas tubes and phototubes, and also a bit of power supply design.

Old but still very useful. Specifically transistor orientated, the best book I have seen is: Principles of Transistor Circuits - a very in depth book.
